Welcome to thompsound.com, the web site dedicated to sounds that THOMP!

Just kidding.

Seriously; this site is a place to exchange information about boom operating, film production in general, and anything else that tickles my fancy.

For more info on Ian (owner/operator/god of this little web site), and his non-film related life; please click on the stick-man in the top right of this page. To view and/or download his C.V. click on the link to your left.

26th August 2009

So, what's been happening in thompsound-land these past few months?

Recently I managed to smash my Left Shoulder in a low-speed Bicycle Accident. It's healing nicely and things are much better now (2 weeks later) - as I'm almost back to 100%

June/July revolved around Booming a feature in Sydney, called "One More Day" apparently the first collaboration between AFTRS (the national film school) and NIDA (national Acting school) in their 50 yr histories.

I've also been tour-guiding for Story-Bridge Adventure Climb on the weekends.

Exciting news to come in the next few months...

...For the moment, here's a shot from my last job.

View from location = Story Bridge, Brisbane

And a pretty view of Sydney from my last job down there.

View from location = Sydney CBD

Sunrise over Brisbane City - from Mt Coot-than Look out 3rd May 2009

Almost another year gone... I'm in Brisbane again after spending the latter months of 2008 on a film in Western Australia.

2009 started out fairly slow, work-wise; so a decision was made to return to study.

10 weeks later, and I've graduated with a Certificate IV in Massage Therapy.

In even more non-film-related-news, (It's amazing: I now have  a life outside of the film industry...) I've started training to become a Tourist Guide on the Story Bridge. Exciting Times.

7th July 2008

Sydney Harbour bridge - 3rd May 2008

...and I'm back in Brisbane.

Things ran a little longer than planned (*as always), however I'm back - and preparing for my skiing holiday in Mt Hutt from August 9-17th 2008.

Not much to say about the last few months - it was work. Fun-work; but work non-the-less.

Hope everyone has been well; and I look forward to catching up with all the brisbane-ites over the next few weeks.

Best contact is either email, or the mobile phone (0414 468 413)

cheers

Ian

P.S. - I'm fully aware of the irony of posting a photo of the SYDNEY harbour bridge, whilst discussing my return to BRISBANE... but it's such an awesome photo - I couldn't resist :)

25th March 2008

oops...

I know it's been a little while...

...well I guess that's a bit of an under statement - it's been over 11 months since my last update.

"AUSTRALIA" went well, "WOLVERINE" is good, I'm in Sydney until at least the end of May 2008; and planning a smaller ski-trip in August 08. - Update (it was horrible; despite the best snow conditions in Years... everyone on the trip was struck with a horrible flu)

nothing else to report really - I'll try to get an updated C.V. on the site soon (it's only adding the credits for the two films anyways...)

16th April 2007

IAN
AWAY
FOR
6 MONTHS

Local Boom Operator Ian Thomson (seen above on the summit of Mt Beerwah) has joined the production sound team of   *********.

He'll be sound assisting during the almost 6 month shoot as it works it's way around the top end of "Australia"

"This is an amazing opportunity to work with some serious "Australian" talent, on an epic "Australian" movie. Also I'll be able to see areas of the country that normally aren't easily accessible to tourists, so that's another bonus."

Unfortunately he won't be able to share any information as he's already signed his strict confidentiality agreement.

"It's cool, this is the first production where I've received a copy of the script with my name printed in the background of every page. Guess I won't be photocopying it :)
Of course I don't mind the extra measures taken to ensure the secrecy of production details; when you're working on a movie with ****** ******* and **** *******, directed by *** *******, then there are going to be people wanting to know the details. If too many are leaked during the shoot, then any chance of seeing the film un-biased is ruined"

Ia
n drives to Sydney on the 19th of April for a week of pre-production, returning sometime in October. (update - it ended up being a few more months than that - I actually returned home Just before christmas 2007)

Alternately; updates and photos of his journey (but not of the set) will be posted at  thompsound.blogspot.com

The site is expanding. Online articles - including the award winning *"top ten sins of the boom operator", and ^"Drama Assignment" are up and running (I suggest you check them out). Soon to come: Links to other informative sites, and forums
